Character Information
Gender | Female | |
Powers | Plant Physiology and Manipulation
Powers Description | Jackie has the ability to take on physical traits from plants. She has a green hue to her skin which allows her to photosynthesize in the place of needs to eat, however, this can often take place without her knowledge and not under her control causing her to turn green whilst this happens. She can take on more physical traits such as thick bark-like skin, cactus spines and leafy foliage to help her disappear into a natural setting (these shed when she reverts to a more human form). This part of her power can cause roots to grow from her feet, ankles and legs in times of extreme heat and dehydration, this can be painful and is usually outside of her control. She can use this if needed to root herself into the ground and keep herself steady, but this requires a lot of concentration and is painful if being used against a heavy opposing force. Jackie produces an aloe-like sap that is excreted through her skin which has mild healing properties this can be used on others for minor injuries, cuts and grazes; if Jackie sustains a more life-threatening injury she can slow down her life signs and fall into a kind of stasis to help preserve her life. Healing can be particularly draining and needs time and resources to recuperate. Much like the ageing of plants, now that Jackie has reached adulthood she ages at a much slower rate, keeping a more youthful appearance. It has been expected that like trees she could live for potentially hundreds of years if her circumstances were right. With the ability to manipulate plants, Jackie can control their rate of growth and nutritional values, both positively and negatively. If there is an excessive increase in the size or density of a plant this can become unstable and cause it to collapse or explode. Examples of this could be the increase of vines or wilds to use as support, using foliage or mosses to cover herself and control the quality and size of crops. Working in large dense areas can be tiring and may bring the onset of roots and photosynthesis. With this power comes emotional triggers that affect plants around her, causing flowers to unexpectedly bloom out of season and others to wilt or wither when they should be thriving. This again is often something that Jackie struggles to control and requires her to dial in her mental struggles or swallow them down. However, this has previously lead to much more serious outbursts which can draw more attention to her powers. |

She hopes to find a way to better connect with the environment around her and look at other ways her powers can be applied in times of crisis and in everyday life.
Hobbies & Interests | There is a deep love of nature and the world around her, Jackie would love to travel and see more of the places she's read about in books and seen on TV. Personal History | Born in 1964 to Edward and Maggie Myers in Hillingdon, Middlesex, Jacqueline Ann Myers first showed signs of a mutation during a measles outbreak shortly before the release of the MMR vaccine. Doctors were perplexed as to how the toddler so rapidly recovered from the illness and the blooms on the ward didn't seem to die for the duration of her admittance. Questions were asked about her percentile growth history and blood tests were taken which only raised more unanswered questions. With her grandfather being a respected practitioner at the local hospital he helped to squash some but not all of the results but Jackie was quickly taught that she was not like other children. Early education was difficult and more physical attributes of her powers started to appear, the child would start to turn green in the yard when playing with other children which quickly garnered attention and rumours began to circulate around the local area. This prompted the family to uproot themselves and move north into the more rural Norfolk countryside where her paternal family would remain in Middlesex. 1971 was a tense time as Maggie found herself pregnant with another daughter, Emily being born and the family held their breath to see if this child would also have unexplained powers. Jackie would be painted as a sickly child by her grandfather and spend more time completing work at home under the guise of Chronic Respiratory Syndrome which meant she was unable to leave the house most days. Their rural location just outside Melton Constable meant the young girls could spend time in the fields without the prying eyes of others. Growing friends with the family who ran the farm, especially their two eldest, James and Lucy Bridger. The two families worked together to protect their children and their livelihoods. The children thrived spending time playing in the fields and experimenting with what different things could be done with her powers and overdoing it sometimes. At the start of her teens, Jackie's powers became so uncontrollable in the heat that she'd sprout roots from her feet and shins in an attempt to hydrate herself. Being forced to take part in a cross-country run resulted in the girl being found catatonic and covered in brush as her body attempted to replenish itself. This terrified her family, prompting a more thorough 'diagnosis' that would stop her from needing to attend school at all. There were times of peace, where between the Bridgers and her own family there were camping trips in the woods and along the coast where she could explore and not have to worry about gossip and rumour as she would be leaving not long after. At home, the paper trail had begun to raise questions with other hospital staff and rumours about the green pixies in the woods by the abandoned train yards. At 16 [1980] the family agreed that school and further education weren't a priority, even if Jackie loved to learn and study more about how plants worked. It was becoming more and more difficult to hide the powers that she had which was often a bone of contention in the family both between her parents and her younger sister felt second fiddle. At 18 after working on the farm and scrimping savings together, Jackie announced she would be leaving. It was better that she stayed away to keep them safe. The Ministry of Defence was less than an hour away and her grandfather had heard an investigation had been started, but nothing had been pinned down yet. She'd managed to pass her driving test with the help of James the eldest Bridger boy and a heavy amount of makeup. It was following this that the pair admitted that their friendship was perhaps more than that, it wasn’t a shock more of an awkward acceptance as they had been close ever since they had met. In 1985 James splashed on a second-hand car of his own, his much prized Ford Escort Cabriolet in white, pleased to be taking them out on the narrow coastal roads for the setting sun and picnics in the fields. This was also the year that Jackie decided for the safety of her family and their well-being it was time to leave. She had managed to save most of her earnings from working on the farm as she still lived at home. On discussing her plans to leave, James wouldn’t settle on the idea of her leaving on her own and insisted on going with her. As his new car would draw too many eyes, he traded it back in for a Cortina, only solidifying the pair's inseparability. Plans were confirmed in the late summer, they would leave for the Peak District and find a place to rent, taking on work locally. They had enough savings between them to potentially set themselves up for a deposit on a house if the situation was right. Whilst the people were more friendly, there was definitely a distaste for a young unmarried couple who kept to themselves. This in turn meant that work opportunities dwindled in favour of more active members of the community despite their contentious work effort and good results. Within two years the pair were forced to reconsider their options especially with work drying up. After a long few nights pouring over the map, a decision was made to travel up through the Pennines picking up odd jobs and manual labour with mostly James taking the lead. Jackie would find a placement with the local landscape and preservation commission, allowing her to be free of prying eyes and limited to admin/office work. Postcards were the best way to stay in contact with her family, never from the location where they were but assorted ones they had collected from North Norfolk knick-knack shops before leaving. The occasional phone call from a pay phone would reassure them everything was okay, for now. Things seemed to be taking an upswing until there was a construction accident during restoration work on a heritage building and James was forced to rest following a fall from scaffolding, breaking his leg and fracturing his skull leading to severe concussion. Jackie now had to try and keep her powers in check and tend to James whilst he recovered. The stress and concern led to several erratic growth issues during tense moments and the threat of needing to protect themselves ultimately resulted in the purchase of an old mail van toward the end of 1988. Jackie kitted out the van with an old mattress, camping stove and gas heater secured with bungee cords. Due to their need to stay unnoticed, James didn’t seek to claim for his injury, telling Jackie that sometimes these things just happen and it would potentially cause issues with working in the area. Reluctantly she agreed and continued to work out on the heaths, a late-night trip to the treasured Dark Spots for stargazing with the van, blankets and a heater resulted in a proposal that wasn’t unexpected and was happily accepted. The response from the family was a squeak and a ‘well-done son’, it was sad they weren’t there to be part of it, but they understood. Despite the love of her work, the difficulty James had finding a new employer following his incident took a knock on their income after the spring of 1989. After daily reviews of papers, both national and local Jackie found a perfect opportunity, Keilder. Remote, rural, green and work she adored. James found work as a handyman maintaining holiday chalets and assisting with groundwork across the sites. Whilst their van was a good source of comfort, accommodation was allowed whilst work was completed on older chalet’s allowing them to avoid bad weather and apply layers. They concocted means for Jackie to work in most conditions apart from the cold and dark combined. Winter toward the Scottish border was often unkind, over the three years they made their home in Kielder. Taking on a run-down former bothy to make an actual home of their own for the first time. There had been whispers between spring and autumn about the unnatural movement of the trees, and a green man in the forest it was no more a story than the folklore of the area. The last of the historic postcards of almost ten years ago had been posted, planning a wedding date but no location. The early spring would be perfect, even if it rained. It was a cold winter evening’s walk back from parking the van in 1991, and up to the cottage, where Jackie was taken after their home was raided by a vigilante cell of the Human Protection League, she attempted to fight back drawing up brambles from the heath and rooting herself down. The voice of James could be heard but she couldn’t point out his location, they were prepared and with the dark and cold she was no match. Jackie was held for some time whilst James struggled to try and locate her, with a struggle she was able to escape exhausting herself in the process. Finding herself in the midst of a snow storm her body shut down, deep rooting and encasing her in a blanket of moss, vines and brush. Anyone else would have perished in the conditions let alone being comatose in the snow. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been out but slowly she came around, the snow had melted and she was able to find her way back to some kind of civilisation. The fabricated lie of car trouble and having the slough it through the forest to get help passably covered her appearance, enough for a change of clothes and a ride to the nearest town. The announcement of the Mutant Registration Act, the attacks against the Avalon Institute and their promise of safe refuge to mutants in need, it seemed like the only way to find James and stay safe. She was alone for the first time in her life. |
