Personality & Traits

General Overview Kai is charming and a natural leader, but he prefers to stay in the background because he just doesn't care about most things anymore. He is confident and seems sure of himself even when he isn’t, and has intense energy and drive. He is direct in his speech and comfortable with initiating conversations and confrontations, but he doesn't like to admit when he’s wrong and rarely offers an apology. Though some people get the impression that he is a complete asshole, others believe he is brave, uninhibited, and adventurous as they are endeared to the more romantic aspects of his personality. A skilled fighter, Kai spent his adolescent and adult life being trained in multiple martial arts forms by his mentor. He stands with a towering and unhidden ambition to be the best at what he does and is extremely competitive and a hard worker.

Despite his coarseness, Kai is much more controlled than he once was. His adoptive father-figure taught him the value of playing fair, controlling his language, and protecting women, children, and the weak, and years of adulthood have bugged out his rougher edges. This can be a very endearing quality, even to those who hate him. Additionally, Kai is very popular with women who like bad boys because he fits the bill perfectly.
Strengths & Weaknesses Kai is bold, rational, practical, original, perceptive, direct, and sociable, but he is also insensitive, impatient, risk-prone, unstructured, defiant, and often can't see the forest for the trees.
Ambitions Kai longs to do some good to make up for all the bad he has done. He wants to redeem himself, and is on a quest for salvation and freedom from the corruption of his past.
Hobbies & Interests Kai loves sports and physical activities of all kinds. He is also a very social person who has had a hard time finding good friends who will pull him in the right direction. As a result, he enjoys the trappings of the darker more criminal life. He has most of his fun at night, when the good kids are asleep.

Personal History Kai was born in 1962 to Daniel and Carmen Akana. His parents met in a bar the year before and had entered into an unhealthy and codependent relationship. A few days before Kai’s birth, the two of them were married at the courthouse in Wahiawa, Hawaii. They moved into a small apartment and began years of mutual emotional abuse. His mother’s great sadness is that his father just didn’t care very much about anything, even them.

Three years after Kai’s birth, his mother became pregnant again. His father, overwhelmed by the news, left her and Kai and moved to the mainland. Several months later, she gave birth to two twin boys who she named Duane and Donte. Soon after the birth of the twins, his mother got several jobs in order to make ends meet and the boys were left with a babysitter until Kai was five and was made to stay at home and watch his brothers himself. His mother started bringing boyfriends around the house as well who were not very nice and, as he grew, Kai became a resentful and disobedient child.

As he grew toward adolescence, his mother responded to his apathy and troubled behavior by lavishing attention and praise on him and defending him religiously against anyone who questioned his greatness. He reminded her of his father and she was afraid that he would leave her as well. When he started to develop super strength, speed, agility, and durability at the age of 12, her anxiety about him leaving mounted, because it seemed that he actually was special.

By the time his powers manifested, Kai had already been spending time with disreputable characters in the streets and was becoming quite the little criminal. He had been arrested twice and his mother was, under the surface, becoming desperate for her son to get help. After getting into a fight with some local children, a mixed martial arts expert named Remy Igo took interest in Kai’s ability set and took him under his wing. He taught the boy about fighting, served as something of a replacement father, and showed him how to talk to girls. Kai’s mother was devastated that she was losing him at first, but understood that her son needed a positive man in his life, so she came to accept Remy into their life.

Kai learned a great deal from Remy, who devoted a considerable amount of time to the boy and even coached him in the use of his powers. When he turned 16, Remy and his mother were approached by a middle-aged Russian man by the name of Boris Morozov. A famed fighter in Russia, he is retiring and says he wants to recruit Kai to train with him. Though his mother and Remy are both sad and skeptical, Morozov does everything he can to convince them that Kai would be in good hands. After several weeks of consideration, they agreed and Kai packed to leave Hawaii for the first time.

Morozov few Kai out to his estate in Siberia where, isolated from the rest of the world, he poured all of his fighting knowledge into the boy. He was conditioned brutally, pushed to his limits, and only after he had achieved peak physical condition did Morozov reveal that he too was a mutant. At that point, the training with his powers began, and with the help of Morozov and several of his associates, Kai learned to use them effectively. He also traveled with Morozov once every few months to recruit troubled youth much like himself, who were difficult to manage but powerful enough to be on their radar. Kai’s role in these meetings was to track these people down and to initiate an acquaintanceship with them that would make Morozov’s recruitment plug work all the easier. Once they succeeded, the new recruits would go back to the mansion for the same form of training Kai received.

By the time he was 20, Kai was training the recruits himself and working as Morozov’s chief assistant. Since the old Russian had a past dotted with trouble and, of course, since his projects were known by the Communist Party, he was often asked to carry out jobs for disreputable men. These jobs would fall to Kai and the band of dangerous troublemakers he was called to lead. The White Wolves were born, and the effects of their work were increasingly felt around the Soviet Union and, after a few years, Europe at large. They were rarely traced back to their crimes, but often suspected. In 1988, however, Kai began to grow disillusioned with doing so much harm and didn’t want to spend his life in the shadow of a man, Morozov, who had grown jaded, cold, and greedy. He asked to be released from his leadership of the White Wolves and Morozov, though angered, accepted on the condition he continued to come and work for him occasionally, when he was called.

During his years in Siberia, he had very often traveled to participate in emerging Ultimate Fighting competitions and had made a small name for himself globally. He decided to capitalize on that bit of fame and started a touring training studio that honed the skills of young fighters participating on a lower level than him. He was a pioneer of the emerging mixed-martial arts form that was starting to revolutionize the fighting communities of the world. His method was to travel from city to city on a rotating basis every month, conditioning any students who came to him during his time near them. Many successful fighters would spend two or even three months with him as he traveled the world, learning from him. He made quite the name for himself and quite alot of money. Even though Morozov used his travels as a cover for his own devious exploits and often involved Kai in his sinister schemes, the young man, approaching 30 years or age, was very happy to have increased independence.

It all changed in 1992 when he was approached by Claire Cavendish and was convinced to come and teach at the Avalon Institute. In pursuit of his dream of living a legitimate life, he decided to take the chance and accepted the role.
